Outreach and education is key.
The City of San Diego’s Year 2000 Redistricting Commission was committed to Community
Outreach. The Commission held over 50 public hearings. Sixteen
(16) public hearings were held
throughout the various communities of the City of San Diego-throughout all
eight (8) City Council Districts. More than 14,000 notices and flyers
were mailed or distributed to publicize the meetings. The flyers and notices
were translated in various languages to reflect the constituencies of the City
Council Districts. The City website posted current information on all
the meetings as well as televised the event on City of
San
Diego television.
The Public Participated:
450 residents
gave testimony
1800 pieces of correspondence were received
65,000 website hits
2,500 attended meetings
78 television airings allowed non-attendees to participate
Concluding Comments from the Commission:
"I
really want to thank on behalf of the Commission, Julie and Alex, who have done
a fantastic job. Our biggest concern was getting the word out, and when they
stepped aboard we forgot about it. They took over and the word got out in
tremendous fashion, and was very timely. I was just amazed how they were able to
send out the information to all the various Districts. When we were meeting, the
time we were meeting. Without them this Commission would have been in real
hardship trying to make sure that the public understood what was going on, and
having the opportunity to come to voice their opinion." Ralph
Pesqueira, Chair, Year 2000 Redistricting Commission, City of San Diego (8/01)
